Building a marketplace for psychic experiences is a trust design challenge unlike any other. In e-commerce, trust is about product quality and delivery reliability. In a live experience marketplace, trust is about the intangible: will this person provide genuine value in a real-time interaction? We designed Kismaa's UX around one principle: reduce the perceived risk of the first session to near zero, then let the experience speak for itself.
The First-Session Problem
New users on a live experience marketplace face three anxieties: 'Is this person legitimate?', 'Will I get value from this?', and 'What if I don't like it?' Our UX addressed each: (1) Legitimacy: practitioner profiles show verified credentials, session history, and real-time ratings — not just curated testimonials. (2) Value: free 2-minute 'preview' sessions let users experience a practitioner's style before committing. (3) Risk: a 'satisfaction or credit' guarantee means users never feel trapped after a bad session.
Preview Sessions as Trust Bridge
The single most impactful UX decision was the 2-minute preview session. Users can start a free, no-commitment preview with any practitioner. No payment required, no session recorded, no pressure. Our data shows that 68% of users who complete a preview session book a paid session within 24 hours. The preview eliminated the 'leap of faith' that was killing conversion for first-time users.
Insight
Preview sessions converted at 68% — 4x higher than the previous direct-booking flow.
Real-Time Social Proof
During live sessions, users see real-time indicators: how many other users are currently with this practitioner, recent session completions, and live rating updates. This social proof is dynamic, not static — it changes during the session. When a practitioner receives a positive rating while you're in a session, you see it in real-time. This creates confidence that the platform is active and the practitioner is genuinely skilled.
Post-Session Value Reinforcement
After each session, users receive a structured summary: key insights discussed, actionable takeaways, and a session quality rating prompt. This summary serves two purposes: it reinforces the value the user received (reducing buyer's remorse) and it generates authentic content for the practitioner's profile. The summary is designed to be shareable — users often share their session insights on social media, creating organic acquisition.
Conclusion
Trust-first marketplace design requires different patterns than transactional e-commerce. Preview sessions, real-time social proof, and post-session value reinforcement each address a specific anxiety in the user journey. The result: 68% preview-to-paid conversion, 4.7/5 average session rating, and 82% repeat booking rate within 30 days.
