The specific stack was chosen after evaluating the client's scalability requirements, compliance constraints, team capabilities, and long-term maintainability — not retrofitted to existing preferences.
Kismaa wasn't a typical app — it was a real-time, emotionally-driven marketplace where users seek guidance and psychics deliver live consultations. That meant three distinct systems — a user app, a psychic app, and an admin operating system — had to behave like one unified platform operating in real-time sync. Most marketplaces struggle with latency, coordination, and fragmented user experiences. Kismaa's bar was higher: users expect instant connection, psychics expect session requests without delay, and billing must be continuous and accurate mid-session. A 2–3 second delay in a mobile interaction is a lost conversion. And it all had to hold up on unpredictable mobile networks, low-end devices, and battery-constrained phones — where real-time products either retain users or lose them permanently.

Rather than bolting features onto separate apps, we engineered three interconnected systems that behave like one unified platform. The user-facing app handles discovery and live chat/call sessions; the psychic-facing app manages availability, accept/reject decisions, and earnings; and the admin operating system provides control, live session monitoring, and analytics. The backend is the brain: a queue-based, event-driven matching engine that pairs users with available psychics instantly, deterministic session lifecycle orchestration, and an atomic payment and wallet system with commission splits. Event-driven UI updates replace polling everywhere — state synchronises across devices in milliseconds. On mobile, persistent socket connections, background-safe timers, and priority push notifications with deep linking keep sessions alive and actionable — while retry queues, graceful degradation, and automatic re-sync mean the system heals itself when mobile conditions don't.
Two role-specific apps for iOS and Android from one codebase. Users discover psychics via rich profiles and video content and connect through low-latency chat/call sessions; psychics manage availability in real time, accept or reject sessions instantly, and track earnings. Persistent sockets, background-safe session timers, and priority push notifications with deep linking into exact app states.
A queue-based, event-driven matching engine that pairs users with available psychics under concurrent load, with event streams architected for horizontal scalability. Robust session orchestration handles start, pause, resume, and end — including edge cases like disconnects and timeouts.
A web experience in full parity with mobile — psychic discovery, profile and video browsing, and seamless transition from discovery to booking to live session to payment. Reusable component architecture and a fluid state machine UX maintain continuity across every step.
A control centre for user and psychic management, live session monitoring, payment and commission control, and platform-wide analytics. Structured behavioral data captured throughout sessions lays the foundation for future AI-driven matching and personalised insights.

We designed the platform as three interacting roles before writing a line of UI — users, psychics, and admins, each with distinct permissions and lifecycle flows. The data model captured users, psychic profiles and availability, sessions, wallets, and earnings with commission splits. We defined the event architecture and API contracts shared by web and mobile, and the real-time sync primitives that every screen depends on.
We built the backend as the brain of the platform — a queue-based matching engine that handles multiple concurrent session requests and pairs users with available psychics instantly. Session lifecycle orchestration covers start, pause, resume, and end, with robust handling of disconnects and timeouts. The payment and wallet system performs real-time billing during sessions with atomic commission splits between platform and psychics, ensuring financial accuracy under concurrency.
The frontend handled real-time emotional interaction — not just UI. We implemented event-driven UI updates with real-time listeners so users see psychic availability instantly and psychics see incoming requests without delay. Video-based discovery was optimised with lazy loading, caching, and adaptive streaming for low-end devices. On mobile, persistent sockets, priority-based push notifications with intelligent fallback (push → in-app sync), and deep linking into exact app states kept every trigger actionable in real time.
The final phase focused on real-world behaviour — the place where real-time products either retain users or lose them permanently. We engineered retry queues for failed actions, graceful degradation, and automatic re-sync on reconnect; aggressive memory optimisation and controlled re-renders for low-end devices; and smart background task handling for battery efficiency. Cross-platform parity was verified across web and mobile, then the platform was launched in production with real-time monitoring in place.
